Gujarat Leads as the Export Powerhouse

With total exports amounting to US $154.5 billion, Gujarat firmly holds the top position. Its leadership is attributed to a strong petrochemical sector, gems & jewelry, engineering products, and a well-developed port infrastructure. The state’s industrial-friendly policies and proactive investment strategies have established Gujarat as India’s clear export leader.

Maharashtra and Karnataka: High-Tech and Diverse Strengths

Maharashtra closely follows with US $137.5 billion in exports, bolstered by its solid foundation in automobiles, chemicals, textiles, and a burgeoning services sector concentrated in Mumbai and Pune.

Karnataka ranks third with US $112.9 billion, highlighting its technology-driven growth. The exports from Bengaluru’s IT and electronics sectors significantly contribute to this, positioning Karnataka as a global center for software services and high-value manufacturing.

Tamil Nadu and Telangana: Rapidly Growing Export Giants

Tamil Nadu is in fourth place with US $75.7 billion, supported by its strong automobile, textile, and electronics industries. Telangana, with US $53.4 billion, underscores the emergence of Hyderabad as a center for IT and pharmaceutical exports.

Haryana (US $38.9 billion) and Uttar Pradesh (US $36.7 billion) have emerged as formidable players, driven by engineering goods, electronics, and agricultural products.

Smaller states and Union Territories such as Dadra & Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu (US $4.65 billion) and Goa (US $3.5 billion) exceed expectations, thanks to specialized industrial exports and advantageous port facilities.

Eastern and Northeastern States Lag

States like Bihar (US $3.6 billion), Jharkhand (US $3.4 billion), and many northeastern states exhibit significantly lower export volumes, reflecting their limited industrial foundations and infrastructure deficiencies.

Key Insight

Although Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka represent a significant portion of India’s overall exports, the information also underscores the potential for other states to develop their export ecosystems. Strengthening manufacturing capabilities, investing in logistics, and improving connections to global markets will be essential for achieving widespread growth.
